JustToGetAway
Ahhhhh, when I was in NYC one of the few places I felt I could get away to from the busyness of the “city that never sleeps” while enjoying the sites was…
— The Brooklyn Heights Promenade
The city is filled with amazing views, but few can top the ones from this scenic third-of-a-mile stretch along the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway. Postcard-like views of lower Manhattan, South Street Seaport, the East River and the Brooklyn Bridge draw photographers, couples on romantic walks, and New Yorkers who want an inspiring place to sit and think. The sound of cars whizzing by directly below on the BQE provides an oddly soothing soundtrack. Sandwiched between pricey Brooklyn Heights properties, pretty tree-lined streets, and rows of conveniently placed benches, the Promenade is also a convenient place to start sightseeing in Brooklyn. On the northern end, you can venture off the path to the foot of the Brooklyn Bridge; to the south of the Promenade, you can explore the cobbled streets of the charming and historic Brooklyn Heights. Or, you can refuel at classic Brooklyn eateries, like the famous Grimaldi’s Pizzeria or the Brooklyn Ice Cream Factory. — (Chris Fichera of NYTimes)
With me taking classes nearby in the neighborhood, “the Promenade” was just a stone’s throw away…so I would go…
sitting alone on one of the old wooden benches as spectactors marveled at the buildings that make up Lower Manhattan’s skyline and joggers got there daily cardio in… —-just exhaling never seemed so blissful to a young man’s mind clouded by the stresses of being a 19 year old student/intern/boyfriend in NYC never ending ambition….
so when I look at pics of my times in NYC —-I wonder why I never took pics of the views from the promenade...then it hit me…
they say a picture is worth a thousand word, but I could never think of a thousand words to describe that feeling…
New Yorkers sometimes take these things for granted but a southern boy from Memphis, being in that place at those times —was reverential…..
…..so if you’re ever in nyc…. go across the brooklyn bridge into the little neighborhood nestled just west of Borough Hall one morning….
take a seat on a bench
…..and breathe
